So after going to the AACO farmer's co-op yesterday for a few things, I thought it would be a good idea to stop by Gammy's house for a little while. She has been a bit depressed lately since her license was taken away and could use some company. Besides that, we don't know how much longer she will be around, so I want to start visiting her more often.
We were getting ready to leave as it was about time for lunch, when Isaac came walking over to me with something in his mouth, a yucky look on his face, and a bottle of medication in his hand. I quickly opened his mouth and tried to pull out whatever it was that he took, but a lot of it had already disintegrated. I probably got about half of the pill out of his mouth, and was trying to get him to spit out any leftover, but it seemed he had already swallowed it. In fact, Danielle said did you swallow it? and he nodded and said yes. It turned out that it was Gammy's blood pressure medication!
Last time we went to visit Gammy he had eaten some rat poison that was under her sink. I I could only imagine what Max would say this time! Although Isaac still gets into a lot of things, I thought he was out of the stage of putting things in his mouth. He DOES however take flouride tablets out of a similar looking bottle, and he loves them. I'm assuming he thought these were flouride tablets, but quickly realized they weren't so he brought the bottle to me, knowing he had done something wrong. I really didn't think he had taken more than one, but there was really no way of knowing for sure.
I called poison control and the man told me that this was not a medication that they feel comfortable letting the kids go home. Instead they want to observe them at the hospital.
The doctor at the hospital said that he needed to be observed for about 6 hours! These were direct orders from poison control (although later the dr. told me that poison control initially wanted him to stay in the hospital for 8-12 hours, but since we had figured out that it was probably only one tablet missing (Gammy counted them, and looked at the date they were filled, etc), and I got about half the tablet out, he ended up letting me go after about 5.5 hours!
Fortunately, mom was at Gammy's house that day cleaning, so she was able to meet me at the hospital, and take Luke and Andrew after a couple of hours at the hospital. Isaac was exhausted, so I was able to get him a little nap in his stroller by walking around the hospital. He would scream and cry every time they would take his blood pressure, so it was hard to get a good reading (until the last one when they gave him a popsicle :) All I could think of was the parents who have children with chronic illnesses who are always in and out of hospitals, having to hold down their babies screaming and crying while they can't even understand what is going on. Or the older kids who DO understand, but have to spend so much of their life in the hospital. I really can't imagine the feelings of these children and parents.
Although my day was shot and did not go as planned, I could only be thankful that God protected my sweet little boy and he came home nice and healthy.
