At the church workday there were donuts.  I had already given one to everyone, but when I came inside the building a little while later, Miriam and Susie Rendell were in the kitchen with donut residue on their hands and face, and Susie was still holding a donut.  I said to Miriam:
Did you have another donut without asking?
No
Miriam, remember we've been talking about lying and how bad it is to lie?
Yes
ok, well I'm going to give you one more chance to tell the truth, and if you lie, you will get spanked. . .Did you eat another donut?
No
Are you lying?
Yes

I was putting Miri and Yitz down for a nap and I made them each take a leak.  Isaac started going and Mir said, "Hey, wait!  Let's cross swords!"  Yitz said, "You can't cross swords, cause you have a 'gina."  I said, "Yeah Miri, you can't cross swords with a 'gina."  She looked up at me and said, "But when I turn three I get a penis!"  Yitz said, "No, only when you're older.  Then you get a penis."  He then looked at me and said, "Her penis isn't growing yet."

Isaac was screaming in bed as I went to tuck in Miriam, who was already laying in bed.  She said "I was listening to Isaac screaming"
Yes, he is screaming, isn't that sad?
She matter-of-factly says, "no, that's not sad, that's happy"
She and Isaac are continually at war with one another, rejoicing when the other gets spanked, etc.  Just one more example of this!

Well, you should have eaten them when I called you out here, and besides, you never even finished your grits.
Daddy said "huh, you didn't?" (in an extremely surprised/half playing voice)

talking about beauty, I had explained "true beauty" to Miriam that morning- its about what's in your heart, not your outward appearance.  At dinner I said "Do you remember what the Bible says about beauty?"
um.... a dress?

Jesus gave us bread and fish, right?
Well, Jesus fed a huge group of people bread and fish one time. . . it was actually 5,000 people!
She begins to count. . .1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Nope, 8!
Then she counts again. . . actually 13

while on our cabin trip over labor Day weekend, Karyn said she asked Miriam if she liked being and kindergarten, and Miriam said "yeah, but I already went, so now I'm in middle school" (or something like this)

(The Kirwans graciously offered to let their dog, Augie, spend the night with Miriam, so every time Sunday rolls around, she starts asking if this is the Sunday that Augie is coming.)
mommy: "What do you like so much about Augie?
Miriam: I just love him so much. . . I like to squeeze him, hug him.  (With a huge smile. . .) I don't know, its just how God made me- to love animals so much!
